Yoplait Removes Eating Disorder Triggering Commercial

I heard the news of this commercial Yoplait commercial that was pulled after receiving pressure from the National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA) from several people and finally had a chance to see it this morning.

My reaction;

1) No shit this is triggering.

2) The second woman who grabs the yogurt, the one who inspires the first to make her decision on what to eat, looks gaunt, pale, and way thin…nice casting.

After the jump: more sarcasm from mamaV and some comforting words

3) Who was the marketing genius to dream this one up? A man? A eating disordered woman? A money hungry moron who thought this would be “cute?”

4) This should make you all feel like you are not alone. This commercial makes a reality of what 90% of the female population goes through when making food choices (the good news is YOU can be part of that free and confident 10%!)

5) The answer is — eat the cheesecake. No guilt. No second guessing. Eat it and move on with your day.

PS Sample_Letter_To_Yoplait_mamavision provided by NEDA’s Media Watch Dog Group that can be sent to Yoplait to “congratulate” them on doing the right thing, and pulling the ad. The tone of the letter is politically correct — which may or may not jive with you, so edit as you see fit. 😉

    Yoplait is barely yogurt. Too much junk in it. I saw this commercial. It weirded me out.

    Eat Greek yogurt. Its better.

    I saw this commercial yesterday. I don’t think it was pulled…

    I dont see how this is triggering.. Maybe im just so desentitized most things dont faze me anmore.. I just thought it was basicaly using how the mind works to sell. I mean any commerical that sells weight loose, products could be considred triggering.. For that matter just about any commeical could be triggering if you are on the verge.. I just find it frustrating because the fact that this commercial go so much slack makes it seem like we are so weak that just the mention of the inner voice most of us hear, will cause a relapse. We have to learn how to ignore this crap, how to be stronger than the media.. This stuff isnt going away so when you see these things use the ad to give you strenght.. Get angry at it and say “im not going to let anyone make me feel less than I am”..

    I can see how this can be triggering and saw it on the news, but if there is one thing I have learned in therapy it is not to pay attention to these types of messages.

    They are always going to be out there, whether you Like it or not. I don’t condone it, but it is what it is. I am with Charlin… find your inner strength and walk away. You can’t always change our culture when it comes to diet and weight loss advertising.

    I saw this on TV today, it’s not banned, at least where I live? But anyway, I hate this commercial. Any their cake and pie/dessert flavored yogurt doesn’t taste anything like it’s supposed to. Bleh.
