  1. Suffering Bulimic says:

Why would you create such a site? There are girls out there who cannot afford treatment and are losing their lives to this illness. You should be ashamed of yourself.

  2. Mariah says:

I have a daughter who lost her life to anorexia because my husband and I could not afford treatment. This website has no right to be in existence.

  3. Nats says:

Im sorry but could you guys explain to me as to why this website should not be around?

Suffering: I have an eating disorder and I still come here and find it a comfort and yes I agree that many people cannot afford treatment and I have been in that position myself but I still dont understand why this site shouldnt be here?! maybe im missing something which I will admit if I am wrong but could you just explain to me so I understand better? Nats

Mariah: I am sorry for your loss, I really am. But why do you believe this website shouldnt be here either? Its a source of comfort to so many people who are suffering from eating disorders ranging from around 13 years old upwards and it makes them feel like they are not alone, that someone understands what they are going through. I just wanted to know why you thought that this site is so bad. x Nats

Okay… here’s my take on this, but here is also where I think Mama V is contradicting herself.

My heart goes out to all on this particular thread who have lost a child or a friend to an ED or may be suffering from one themselves. But, for those of you new to this site, Mama V’s intentions are in the right place and she does give quite a bit of her time to raising awareness about eating disorders.

Having had Anorexia for 23 years and doing well now, I was fortunate enough to be able to have parents who could afford and had coverage to get me help- from some of the best specialists in the world. I have always believed Mama V is well intentioned in her mission, but I don’t agree with her on many things. Primarily, that the modeling industry and the media may trigger but do not cause eating disorders. I believe as many eating disorder experts in the field do, that eating disorders are biologically based psychiatric illnesses, and all other sources are just a contributing factor. If you never had one before going into modeling or picked up a fashion magazine, I believe the psychological traits to develop one were always there, and the media and the modeling fueled the fire, otherwise, why doesn’t every person who reads a magazine or walks a runway have one? Cindy Crawford doesn’t, nor does Brooke Shields. This is not to say they may not have gotten flack or comments, but I don’t hear either of them saying they had Anorexia or Bulimia, but I could be wrong about that.

I agree with Nats that a lot of people find comfort in this site and have met people and learned of resources that they have found helpful. But I can see where sometimes, MV’s delivery can be hypocritical and often confusing to me, which I have pointed out to her several times.

If you search back she had another video where she said that she didn’t want the Oprah show to be a missed opportunity that could help Ed patients, she just wanted to send a message about a right way to go about angling the show that wouldn’t exploit patients, their privacy, and their healing process or glamorize eating disorders. From what I have heard (my sister in law is a television producer for Oprah’s cable network, just not one for the upcoming ed show), this is the concern that the Eating Disorder community has raised questions about it.

So in this particualr video, she is boycotting to stop the show’s production. But in another one, if you look at her other videos and her face book page on it, she claims she is trying to find the right way to go about it. I agree with her that there is no easy answer, but I think she has to maintain a position of consistency so her readers know where she stands, because it seems like she is saying the exact oppisite here of what she did a few weeks ago. I am not sure why this is… I think perhaps she gets very fired up before she types and sometimes doesn’t realize.

Anyways, my point is, as much as I disagree with her on many things, I do believe her heart is in the right place but she could be more cautionary in how she words things and be a little bit more aware of how she comes across.
